- ÌÇÐÄVlog Clarion’s Upward Bound program serves 94 students each year.
- Active since 1978, the program includes an academic‑year component and a six‑week summer residential academy.
- Students are served from the following school districts:
- Students may apply beginning in the spring of their 8th‑grade year and remain through high school graduation.
- Participation in Upward Bound does not require students to attend ÌÇÐÄVlog.
Supporting Students on the Path to College

at ÌÇÐÄVlog Clarion is a free, federally funded program that helps high school students build the skills, confidence and academic foundation needed to prepare for college. The program offers year‑round academic support, guidance and enrichment opportunities for eligible students in grades 9–12.
Upward Bound helps students stay on track in high school, explore college options and take steady steps toward earning a two‑ or four‑year college degree.

Upward Bound Program Details
Upward Bound provides students with the tools, experiences and support needed to succeed in high school and plan for college. Program opportunities include:
- Academic support and tutoring to strengthen study and test‑taking skills
- College and career planning to help students identify goals and clear pathways
- College visits and trips to the National College Fair in Pittsburgh
- Assistance with college applications, financial aid, fee waivers and scholarship searches
- SAT preparation, registration support and fee waivers
- Family workshops focused on college planning and financial aid
- Field trips to museums, cultural sites and other educational destinations
- Cultural, social and recreational activities that build confidence and community
- Preparation for standardized assessments such as the PSSA and Keystone exams
- Opportunities to complete rigorous coursework that supports college readiness
The six-week residential Summer Academy offers participants an opportunity to experience college life in a safe environment while residing on campus in a university residence hall.
Upward Bound students are encouraged to set ambitious goals and move toward them with steady support. Participants are expected to:
- Attend and participate in Upward Bound activities
- Take challenging, college‑preparatory courses and work toward strong grades
- Take the SAT and/or ACT during junior and senior years
- Apply to at least four colleges or universities during senior year
- Stay committed to enrolling in college immediately after high school
You may qualify for Upward Bound if you:
- Attend one of the program’s target high schools
- Are from a family in which neither parent or guardian holds a four‑year college degree
- Meet established by the U.S. Department of Education
Students may apply beginning in the spring of their 8th‑grade year and remain in the program through high school graduation.
To participate in ÌÇÐÄVlog Clarion’s Upward Bound program, students must attend a participating western PA high school and submit an application.
