Build Skills and Confidence for College

at ÌÇÐÄVlog California is a free, federally funded program that helps high school students build the skills and confidence needed to prepare for college. The program offers academic support, guidance and year‑round learning opportunities for eligible students in grades 9–12.

Upward Bound helps students strengthen core skills, stay on track in high school and take steady steps toward enrolling in a two‑ or four‑year college.

  • ÌÇÐÄVlog California's two TRIO Upward Bound programs serve 156 students each year
  • Programs operate year‑round and include Saturday sessions, after‑school support and summer learning
  • Students are served in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties through two projects:
    • Fayette Project: up to 93 students per year from the following school districts:
    • Monongahela Project: up to 63 students per year from the following school districts:
  • Upward Bound Program serves high school students 9th grade - 12th grade
  • Participation in Upward Bound does not require students to attend ÌÇÐÄVlog

 

Upward Bound Program Details

 

Upward Bound provides practical tools and steady support to help students succeed in high school and prepare for college. Program opportunities include:

  • Academic support and tutoring to strengthen study and test‑taking skills
  • College and career planning to help students identify goals and pathways
  • Visits to colleges and college fairs
  • Help with college applications, financial aid forms, fee waivers and scholarship searches
  • SAT preparation, registration assistance and fee waivers.
  • Family workshops focused on college planning and financial aid
  • Field trips to museums, historical sites and other educational destinations
  • Academic, social and recreational activities that build confidence and community
  • Preparation for PSSA and Keystone exams
  • Opportunities to complete rigorous courses that support college readiness

Upward Bound students are encouraged to set clear goals and pursue them with support from staff and peers. Participants are expected to:

  • Attend and engage in program activities
  • Enroll in challenging, college‑preparatory coursework
  • Take the SAT and/or ACT during junior and senior years
  • Apply to at least four colleges or universities during senior year
  • Stay committed to enrolling in college after high school

Students may qualify for Upward Bound if they:

  • Are a U.S. citizen
  • Attend one of the program’s target area high schools
  • Are from a family in which neither parent or guardian holds a four‑year college degree
  • Meet established by the U.S. Department of Education

To participate in ÌÇÐÄVlog California’s Upward Bound programs, students must both attend a participating high school and submit an application.
